February 1999.  Twin tunnels at Kitasumakouku (380 m/550 m x 11 m wide) to be constructed in tuffs, conglomerates, sandstones and mudstones by jv of Konoike/JDC and Tobishima/Tokyu costing Y10.2 billion commencing June/December, 1999 for commissioning 2003. High Speed Rail Kagoshima-Kumamoto

Alignment requires 13 tunnels, all 75m2 cross-section. 3,394 m-long Daini-Shibisan is under construction by Kajima/Konoika using 4 m Swellex bolts in heavily waterbearing and fractured sandstones, shales and clays. Shioyama at 10 km will be the longest land railway tunnel in Japan. 5,242 m Tagami tunnel under construction by Taisei Corporation in jv with Toc and Chizaki will be second longest and is first recorded use of a Nordberg Lokotrack as a mobile face crusher in a tunnel. Jordan

Jordan, Al Wehda Dam - jo/12

Irrigation and Water Supply

The Jordan Valley Authority has awarded to Turkish contractor í–zaltin the construction of the $86 million Al Wehda dam in the northern Jordanian region of Maqaren on the Yarmuk River, which flows from Syria into Jordan. Associated works include a 2 x 600 m tunnel, 3.5 m in diameter, to be driven in limestone. The final lining will consist of a 40 cm-thick layer. Construction to begin in June and last 30 months. Jordan, El Shidiya - jo/11

Contract award to consortium of Raytheon and Wisconsin Central to run freight railway line on behalf of government. Agreement involves construction of two extensions in order to connect the fertiliser factory near one end of the Aquaba line with the El Shidiya phosphate mine. Two tunnels with a total length of 1 km will be needed. Systra is conducting feasibility study in association with local consultants. November 1999.

  SNC-Lavalin of Canada in association with Guris of Turkey supported by the Canadian International Development Agency delineating capital city metro project, preparing preliminary designs, and establishing cost and financing strategies. May 1996.  Construction to resume after six-year delay due to lack of funds. Some 7 km of tunnels bored in the late-1980s will be part of design study which is funded in part by Canadian IDA. September 1997.

Breakthrough reported on the 6.3 km tunnel, 4.2 m in diameter, part of Phase 1 of the Sondu-Miriu Hydroelectricity Generation Project. Construction started in March, 1999 by a jv of Konoike, Veidekke, and Murray & Roberts for completion in March, 2003. Design and supervision by Nippon Koei Co. Ltd. Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan, Taldyk Pass - kg/11

Road

A 2,000 m tunnel alternative under the Taldyk Pass at an altitude of 3,000 metres is under study by Finnroad as part of the improvement of the Silk Road between Osh and Erkesh Tam. The tunnel will not be feasible before the volume of traffic is sufficient. It would be a single tube, 11 m-wide including pedestrian sideways. Expected geology is limestone. Drill/blast method. Support with rockbolts, shotcrete and steel arches, if needed. The timing of the project depends on political decisions yet to be made by China, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Excavation is roughly estimated at $20 million. Financing by loans from Chinese international financial institutions. The client will be the Kyrgyz ministry of transport and communications. Completion of first project on the Nam Theun river, largest tributary of the Mekong river. Located 100 km above the confluence. 210 MW power station and headstocks are above ground. Recchi-CMC, a consortium of Italian construction companies, excavated 5.5 km-long, 45 sq m-section low pressure headrace tunnel between the upper Nam Theun and the lower Nam Hinboun reservoirs where the difference in elevation is 240 m. Tunnel will transfer 110 cu m/sec of water. Three identical 12 m-long self-propelled steel forms with hydraulic winches to enable the equipment to tackle 14 % gradients were supplied by CIFA Spa along with 5 cu m concrete mixers mounted on Astra 4WD dumpers and trailer-mounted concrete pumps. December 1999.CMC signed a EUR180 million construction contract for the Theun Hinboun expansion project. The project is the expansion from 220 to 440 MW of the installed capacity of the existing hydroelectric power plant originally built by Recchi-CMC JV in 1995-1998. The contract has been awarded by Theun Hinboun Power Company Ltd, owner and operator of the existing power plant and co-owned by Electricité du Laos (60%), Statkraft, the Norvegian state-owned utility (20%) and GMS Power of Thailand (20%). CMC is responsible for the design and construction of all civil works included the hydromechanical equipment. Design consultants will be Coyne et Bellier of France and Lombardi of Switzerland. The completion of the works is scheduled after 40 months. Expertise to be provided by Sweco includes all traditional hydropower engineering disciplines such as civil and structural engineering, hydrology, geology, geo-technology, dam engineering, mechanical engineering, turbine engineering, electrical engineering including transmission, and distribution. CMC (Ravenna), engineering consultants for the Theun Hinboun project, have awarded the precast segment mould contract to Euroform Srl, a subsidiary of Herrenknecht located in Gessate, Milan. Euroform will supply in June, 2009 four sets of wheeled vibrated moulds and a segment production carousel. Each precast concrete ring comprises six segments, with the invert segment incorporating the housing for the TBM back-up rails. Each ring is 1.6 m-wide with 6.9 m ID and 7.46 m OD.
