Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has handed over the feasibility study for an underground tunnel in Mumbai to Arup, following withdrawal by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) while they had begun the study of geological conditions. DMRC had initially volunteered to do the feasibility study for a tunnel, linking the Haji Ali area of central Mumbai to Nariman Point in south Mumbai. Arup will submit the report in two to three months. Other options being weighed, apart from the tunnel, are an undersea tunnel or the stiffly-opposed 4.35 km Pedder Road flyover that would help ease vehicular congestion due to the opening of the Bandra-Worli sealink bridge later this year. The joint venture of Hindustan Construction Company Ltd.
(HCC, 55%) and Hyundai Development Corporation
(HDC, 45%) has been awarded a Rs. 2,126 crore contract by the Municipal
Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) for the Mumbai Coastal Road Project,
Package 02, to be completed in four years (48 months). The scope of work
includes design and construction of road, bridges, interchanges including
reclamation and associated works between Baroda Palace near Haji Ali and the
Worli end of Bandra Worli Sea Link. Visit https://www.hccindia.com.
The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has
awarded Larsen & Toubro for the construction of the Mumbai Coastal Road
Project (MCRP), Packages 01 & 04, total worth Rs 7,489 crore. L&T will build a 7.75 Km coastal road
from Princess Street Flyover to Baroda Palace, near Haji Ali, including an
underground tunnel passing below Girgaum Chowpatty, Malabar Hills and
Priyadarshini Park.
Package-01 of the contract involves the construction of a
3.82 Km long, 8-lane highway over reclaimed land from Priyadarshini Park to
Baroda Palace including interchanges at Amarson Garden and Haji Ali. The Haji
Ali interchange will be a multilevel interchange inside Haji Ali bay providing
connectivity to the existing Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road.
Package-04 of the contract involves the construction of a
3.93 Km stretch of coastal road from Princess Street Flyover to Priyadarshini
Park. The scope includes construction of up & down ramps from Marine Drive
connecting to the 3.45 km and 11 m –wide twin tunnel from Princess Street
flyover to Priyadarshini Park, which will pass below Girgaum Chowpatty, Malabar
Hills and exit at Priyadarshini Park connecting to the Package-01 of the
project.
Tunnel ventilation will be installed using a Saccardo nozzle
system, instead of the existing jet fan-based system. In the event of a fire,
the fans in the Saccardo system are not affected and hence there is lower
maintenance cost. Also, there is continuous air circulation with the system.
The tunnel will be equipped with a structural fire
protection system — insulation materials, coatings, and systems used to prevent
or delay fire-induced temperature rise — that can withstand 1,300 °C. This
system will be earthquake resistant.
It will also have a safe/refuge room where people can be
moved until any fire is under control and citizens can be rescued. There will
be thirteen cross tunnels, one every 250m, which will be used to rescue and
move vehicles and people during a disaster. Seven cross tunnels will be for
vehicles and the remaining six are for people. For further information please visit
