The deadline for the open procedure covering the modernisation of the Vidin–Sofia railway line (Vidin–Sratsimir section) has been postponed to 21/05/2026.
Project Overview
The scheme involves the construction of a new 20 km railway section (p.k. 149+393 – p.k. 129+225), forming part of a wider upgrade between Medkovets and Vidin. The works aim to improve alignment, increase speeds, and enhance overall network performance.
The project includes:
- One main railway tunnel: 2,975 m
- One new station
- Associated civil and railway infrastructure works
Tunnel & Engineering Scope
Main Tunnel
- A single tunnel of 2,975 m forms the core of the project
- Designed to bypass existing curved sections, enabling a straighter and shorter alignment
Design & Build Contract
- Open procedure covering both design and construction
- Contractor responsibilities include:
- Preparation of the working investment project in line with client specifications
- Provision of author’s supervision during construction
Civil Works & Rail Infrastructure
Extensive works are required to upgrade the corridor, including:
- Installation of heavier rail systems
- Upgrades to catenary (electrification) systems
- Construction of viaducts and bridges across challenging terrain
- Integration of the tunnel within the new alignment
Operational Performance
The upgraded line is designed for:
- Passenger trains: up to 160 km/h
- Freight trains: up to 120 km/h
Strategic Importance
This section forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridor and benefits from significant European Union support, highlighting its importance for regional and cross-border connectivity.
