SBT Sverige AB, subsidiary of Czech company Metrostav Group,
secured the EUR182 million (SEK1.94 bn) contract to undertake drill and blast tunnelling
for a 4•1 km western extension of the Stockholm metro Blue Line from the
northern terminus at Akalla to the Jarfalla housing development near Barkaby,
adding two new stations.
The Akalla - Barkarbystaden section will run in two
single-track tunnels, while Barkarbystaden – Barkarby will have a double-track
bore and a service tunnel. The intermediate station at Barkarbystaden is
intended to serve a new city district now being developed on a former airfield
site.
The Barkaby terminus will be 30 m below ground, providing
interchange with suburban rail services. Tunnelling is scheduled to begin in
June for completion in September 2023. The extension is now expected to open in

Implenia have secured a EUR98.50 million (SEK1 billion) Stockholm Region contract for construction of the new underground station Sofia on the metro Blue line in Stockholm. The contract includes elevator shafts, two single-track tunnels for the subway and a parallel service tunnel. This requires the construction of 4.6 km of drill and blast tunnels. Stockholm’s blue subway line is being extended from the centrally located Kungstradgarden to Nacka in the southeast of the Swedish capital as well as to Hammarby Sjöstad in the south. The new Sofia metro station, located close to Stigbergsparken, will become an important hub for travellers. Located approximately 100 m below ground, it will be one of the deepest underground stations in the world. Region Stockholm, Förvaltning för utbyggd tunnelbana – the state-owned company responsible for Stockholm’s subway infrastructure, awarded Implenia the EUR95.92 million (SEK1bn) contract to build the connecting tunnel to the expanded metro depot in Stockholm, Högdalen.
The project consists of building the required infrastructure to connect the expanded depot to the existing metro track Farstagrenen. A new concrete tunnel and trough will be planned and built at the connection point to Farstagrenen. The rock tunnel consists of approximately 2000 m of track tunnel and a 500 m long underground parking area for trains. The tunnel is being built in a densely populated urban area and close to other railway tracks using blasting technology.
