The Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded contracts for Phase 1 of the DTL worth nearly SGD500 million to three construction firms which have extensive experience in large-scale projects in Singapore. The first deal (contract 905) went to Japanese construction giant Shimizu, which bagged a SGD102.8 million contract to design and build tunnels between the Promenade station, Marina Bay and the integrated resort (IR) development. The LTA on 12th February marked the start of construction of Stage 1 of the 40 km line with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Chinatown station. The 4.3 km fully underground Stage 1 comprises six stations (Chinatown, Cross Street, Landmark, Bayfront, Promenade and Bugis) and will be completed by 2013. The DTL will be built in three stages, with Stage 2 to be completed in 2015 and Stage 3 in 2016.
