Highways England has awarded Jacobs the EUR184,5 million (GBP162.5 million) Integration Partner contract which will see the company act as a catalyst for collaboration between Highways England and the Lower Thames Crossing’s three main works contracts responsible for delivering the most ambitious road scheme in a generation.
The Lower Thames Crossing will improve journeys by almost doubling road capacity across the Thames east of London, with 23 km (14.3 miles) of new road featuring two 4 km (2.6-mile)-long tunnels. The scheme will help to unlock a wealth of economic benefits by supporting over 22,000 jobs during construction and creating better connections to the region’s ports, distribution hubs and manufacturing centres.
The Integration Partner will bring a diverse range of capabilities to create a strong support function to Highways England in connection with the project, including programme management, stakeholder management and risk management. Their experience-based insight will enable objectives for time, cost and quality to be met.
Jacobs will begin to prepare the scheme to move into the delivery phase so that main works contractors will be in a good position to be quickly mobilised. They will also support the successful delivery of the construction, integrated system commissioning and handover to operations helping to ensure the project leaves a great legacy. Network Rail has awarded Jacobs Engineering Group a contract to support its proposed new rail link from the West of England to London Heathrow airport. The proposed Western Rail Access to Heathrow includes a new direct, double track link between the Great Western main line at Langley in Berkshire (about 27 km west of Paddington Station in London) into Terminal 5 at Heathrow airport. Jacobs is producing a design for Network Rail’s Development Consent Order, which is expected to be submitted in early 2016. Jacobs’ scope of work includes topographical surveys and geotechnical investigations, tunnelling design for the new 5 km route, and railway systems designs for track and overhead line equipment.
Network Rail’s Signalling Design Group is producing the signalling design for system integration by Jacobs as lead designer. Jacobs is also providing environmental surveys and impact assessment (EIA) to inform optimization of the tunnel route and location and design of surface structures. An environmental mitigation programme is being developed as part of the EIA to minimize impact on local residents and the environment during both construction and operation phases. Jacobs delivered pre-feasibility and feasibility studies in the early planning stage of the project which identified significant potential cost savings.
