The first part of the deal is worth about GBP473 million and will involve boring 27.5 km of tunnel in two sections - including a continuous tunnel of 20 km - from Hackney in the east to Willesden in the west, due to be completed in 2015. The winning team will also be responsible for a 7.1 km stretch between Hurst and Eltham in southeast London, which will be finished by 2014. A fourth tunnel, which runs for 7.4 km between Wimbledon and Kensal Green in southwest London, is being tendered separately and construction will run from late 2009 to 2016. All the tunnels will house 400 kV cables that will feed into National Grid's substations in Hackney, St John's Wood, Wimbledon, Willesden, Hurst and Eltham.   Thames Water has awarded AMEC a GBP28 million contract to construct a 4.5 km-long 2.85 m-diameter concrete-lined tunnel will run from an existing shaft at Thames Water's reservoir site in Stoke Newington and join the Ring Main at the New River Head pumping station in Finsbury. The geology will consist of varying ground conditions, ranging from London clay to Thanet sands. AMEC will use a Lovat EPB TBM to tunnel under Highbury and Islington, crossing under six London Underground tunnels, five Network Rail tunnels, a canal tunnel and two major sewers.   Extensions to the Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow Airport have been approved by UK secretary of state for transport Stephen Byers. The Heathrow Express and the Piccadilly Line will be extended from the present Central Terminal Area at Heathrow to the proposed Terminal 5.
