Transport secretary Alistair Darling said the plan to build Crossrail could be delayed by a further round of public consultation. This would mean Crossrail would not be built before the 2012 Olympics, which could hold back a bid by Britain to host the event. The east-to-west link includes twin 9 km mainline rail tunnels under London linking Paddington and Liverpool Street stations. They would cost about £5 billion.
