Two 1.6 km single-track tunnels will extend from the terminal building under the runway and the River Almond before surfacing to the east of Carlowrie Estate. The GBP505 million route will split into two at Carlowrie, with one heading to Glasgow and the other to Fife, allowing direct services to Edinburgh Airport from all over Scotland. A new low level station will also be constructed near the southeast corner of the airport terminal building. From there the new link will pass close to the existing Hilton Hotel before tunnelling under the A8 and rejoining the Edinburgh-Glasgow main line near Ratho. Work on the project is expected to begin in 2006 with transport chiefs hoping the Edinburgh Airport rail link will open in 2010. Read E-News Weekly 8/2003. The 16 km double-track line would include 2.6 km of twin tunnel as part of the runway tunnel option and a station within the tunnel near the south east corner of the airport terminal building. This option would connect at its western and eastern extremities with the Edinburgh to Glasgow (E&G) line via a new railway between Winchburgh and Edinburgh Park Station with the alignment passing under the airport runway.
