The Horta-Vall d'Hebron section on Line 5 will be built in a time frame of two and a half years, for completion scheduled in 2009, at a price tag of EUR111.6 million. Construction will recommence in December, in accordance with a modified project and implementing highly reinforced security measures. The new construction project will be based on complementary geotechnical investigation undertaken to know the subsoil composition, which will update the geological mapping and identify mines and wells, and on the revision of the works already executed. Sixteen new core drills have been planned, in addition to the 39 boreholes already done. On the other hand, preliminary inspections will be carried out to evaluate the status of the buildings situated in the influence zone of the tunnel. To maximize security and whatever the ground type that crews encounter at any time, all the tunnel will be supported with steel arches placed at short distance and a thick concrete layer. In January 2005, a collapse in a service tunnel obliged to evacuate a total of 1,276 people from their homes. Since then, work has been halted. The remaining 2.5 km stretch still to be bored will commence in the existing Horta station, then will continue until El Carmel station, which will be located in the cavern already partially excavated, to later run to the new Taxonera-Coll station and the last one in Vall d'Hebron, where Line 5 will connect with Line 3. The decision is the consequence of sinkholes affecting the L'Hospitalet-La Torrassa section. Local commuter services on three suburban lines operated by Renfe and one line operated by the Catalan railways have been interrupted since 20th October. A sixth sinkhole, appeared in Bellvitge station on 26th October, has led to halt work on that section. The work stoppage has amplified the controversy that the Sants-La Sagrera tunnel project has triggered in Barcelona because of the fact that its route passes near the Sagrada Familia cathedral. Read E-News Weekly 45/2007.The joint venture formed by Sacyr and its subsidiaries Scrinser and Cavosa is the best placed to pocket the contract, with a 35-month construction time (two years and 11 months). The consortium will build 4.5 new kilometres of tracks to link La Elipa with the Las Rosas neighbourhood. The time frame to complete the works is 27 months. The project will add four new stations (Nicolas Salmerí³n, Alsacia, Guadalajara and Ginebra). Construction will begin before the end of the year. The builders will use a tunnel boring machine. Excavation will start from the end of the route and conclude where the line now ends and what will be the start of the future extension. The builders will take advantage of a cul de sac at La Elipa station (the last on the line at its eastern end), which was built as a reservation for future extensions during the previous eastern extension of the line. The entry shaft from where the TBM will be launched will be located next to the last of the four stations, in an area not built after crossing the M-40.
