TBM Breakthrough on Lima metro Line 2

On the 21/01/2022 Delia, the first TBM to excavate beneath the city of Lima (Peru) and launched in July 2021, has completed the 720-m tunnel section between San Juan de Dios (E-19) and Circunvalación (E-18) stations in the San Luis district for the Lima and Callao’s metro Line 2. The breakthrough ceremony was celebrated in the presence of the Peruvian President Pedro Castillo and the Minister of Transport and Communications, Juan Silva.

The project includes the excavation of the 27 km metro Line 2 tunnel connecting the ATE and Callao districts, and the construction of the 8 km section of metro Line 4 from Av. Elmer Faucett to Av. Nestor Gambetta. These two new lines for the Lima’s metro system will improve mobility across the city, one of the most congested in the world and they will allow more than a million people to travel between Ate and Callao in just 45 minutes instead of the current 2.5 hours.

The TBM Delia was named  after  Mrs. Delia Tasaico Del Pino, the  first  Peruvian  woman to graduate as an engineer from the National University of Engineering (UNI). The TBM is 120 m long with a 10.27 m diameter and together with a second TBM, will contribute to the construction of 35 stations, 36 ventilation and emergency shafts and two train depots for the two metro lines involving the 10 districts: Ate, Santa Anita, El Agustino, San Luis, La Victoria, Cercado, Breña, Bellavista, Carmen de la Legua and El Callao.

The TBM will immediately begin to drive the second 736 m section of the tunnel from the Circunvalación station  (E-18) to the Nicolas Ayllon station (E-17) in El Agustino.
