On the Sydney Metro West project, the planning process has started for the construction of 9 new metro stations between Westmead and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD – as well as the precincts around them. The project will double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, with a travel time between the two centres of about 20 minutes.
A Scoping Report, lodged with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, is seeking approval for major building works including fit-out of the twin railway tunnels; construction of the new stations and service facilities; building the station precincts; and operating the new underground metro line.
The report provides information on proposed works and outlines the next steps in preparing a detailed Environmental Impact Statement, which will be open for community feedback in early 2022.
In 2020, work started on this city shaping project at The Bays to allow TBMs to be in the ground in 2022; in March 2021, the project received its first major planning approval for the project Concept between Westmead and the Sydney CBD and station excavation and tunnelling between Westmead and The Bays.
