Rosie completes her journey!

On the 29th of August 2018 Rosie, the Robbins Crossover TBM, broke through on the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel. This tunnel is the largest part of the Akron Waterways Renewel project. The TBM, which is 9.14 m (30 feet) wide and 91.44 m (300 feet) long, has reached the construction area near the intersection of South Main Street and West Exchange Street. The TBM, launched in August 2017, has now completed the three-part tunnel that is nearly 1920 m (6,300 feet) long, 8.23 m (27-feet) in diameter and 51.82 m (170 feet) deep.

The machine will be disassembled and then put up for sale. It will need a further year to connect the tunnel, which will divert storm water from the sewers, to new and existing sewer systems converging on the downtown area. The tunnel will hold 97 million litres (25.6 million gallons) of stormwater and sewage during heavy rainstorms in the future . The tunnel will control the overflows into the Ohio & Erie Canal and Little Cuyahoga River.
