On 13 November, the Mix Shield TBM Gaia (4.08 m diameter, 163 m long) reached its first kilometre for the construction of the main tunnel of the Turin Middle Collector, a strategic infrastructure serving Turin and 20 municipalities in the southern and western areas of the city: Beinasco, Bruino, Cambiano, Candiolo, Chieri Pessione, La Loggia, Moncalieri, Nichelino, Orbassano, Piobesi, Piossasco, Poirino, Riva di Chieri, Rivalta di Torino, Sangano, Santena, Trana, Trofarello, Villastellone and Vinovo.
The machine - whose cutterhead is equipped with 18 disc cutters – is designed to install a ring lining composed of six reinforced concrete segments. The TBM, which began excavation on June 3 after being assembled at a depth of 20 m, operates on three daily shifts and advances at an average of 20 m/day. It will excavate a 9.5-km-long tunnel, crossing heterogeneous soil more than 10 m below the groundwater level.
The works have been commissioned to the COLMETO Consortium S.c.a.r.l., composed by Ghella and Itinera. Construction management has been entrusted to the Group’s engineering company, Risorse Idriche.
