The Canarian government awarded a joint venture of FCC, Corsan-Corviam and Petrecan a EUR111.7 million contract for the construction of the Puerto Rico-Mogan highway in Gran Canaria Island. The 6.3 km section includes 3,805 metres of tunnel (seven twin tunnels which account for 60% of the route) and 1,130 metres of viaduct. Construction will begin as soon as land expropriation is done. Traffic on the existing 12 km roadway is slow and dangerous due to its orography. The new toll-free road section involves a dual carriageway with two 3.5 m lanes each and a variable median. It will extend highway GC-1 from Barranco de El Lechugal to the junction of Mogan with Puerto Rico (road GC-30). Financing will be secured through the "German method", i.e. there will be only one deferred payment at the end of the contract, which will accelerate the commissioning of the new infrastructure.
