Updates on the HS2 contracts to build Britain’s new railway

On 17.7.2017 a series of HS2 announcements took place.The contracts to design and construct bridges, tunnels, embankments and viaducts for the London to Birmingham high speed rail line, HS2 Phase 1, have been awarded. Click uk/65 for more information.

 

In addition both the invitations to tender for the station design services contracts for all four Phase 1 stations, the 3 new stations Birmingham Curzon Street, Birmingham Interchange and London’s Old Oak Common. This includes the London Euston station which is to be expanded. There has also been a invitation to participate in dialogue for the Euston Master Development Partner released to shortlisted bidders.

 

The shortlists for the station design contracts include Arup, Mott MacDonald, WSP, Arcadis and a Jacobs/BuroHappold/Idom joint venture. All five bidders have been invited to tender for at least two station packages.

 

The shortlists for the Euston Master Development Partner contract are Westfield Europe, Euston Regeneration Partnership (led by Argent Related Services), Canary Wharf Group, Land Securities and Lendlease Europe. The contracts for stations and Euston Master Development Partner will be awarded early next year.

 

In addition Chris Grayling, the Transport Secretary, introduced a Bill to Parlament to deliver the next phase of HS2, from the West Midlands to the West Coast Main Line south of Crewe (Phase 2a). This part of the route, if approved by Parliament, can open in 2027, 6 years earlier than planned, bringing the benefits of HS2 to the north and Scotland sooner. Phase 2a will bring HS2 within reach of all the cities in the north that have existing rail connections to Crewe.

The Transport Secretary also updated the House on other developments along the Phase 2 route including decisions on the Phase 2b route from Crewe to Manchester and West Midlands/Birmingham to the East Midlands and Leeds.
