Milan’s new M4 Metro Line: tunnel excavations completed

12/09/2020

On 09/09/20 the final breakthrough ceremony was held in the presence of authorities for the first of two TBMs involved in the construction of M4 metro line (Blue line) central section in Milan. The TBM arrived in the future Solari underground station. With the second TBM’s arrival a few days away, the TBMs have together excavated 620,000 m3 of earth along 9.2 km for the line’s two parallel tunnels.

After the breakthrough of the second TBM, both machines will be dismantled. The rails will then begin to be placed along the floor of the two tunnels, along with the installation of the electric power supply system and computer guidance system.

The excavation work, which reached a monthly production record of 540 m, operated in a complex geological and geo-technical environment. The line will be 15 km long with 21 stations, linking the eastern part of the city where the Linate city airport is located with the San Cristoforo FS station to the southwest.
