On the 14.02.2016 Qatar Rail, which is overseeing the construction of the country’s integrated railway network, celebrated as the two TBMs Al Rayyan and Al Gharrafa successfully completed their section of the tunnelling currently taking place on Doha Metro’s Green Line.
The TBMs started tunnelling work in September last year and reached the final destination at Msheireb after four breakthroughs. The TBMs are two of 21 being used in the first phase of the Doha Metro project which saw Qatar recognised by Guinness World Records for having the largest number of TBMs operating simultaneously in a single project. They will now be dismantled and taken back to the German TBM supplier’s office which is in Doha where their parts will either be recycled or sold off. The remaining four TBMs are expected to complete the work on the Green Line in early April this year. Leatooriya will be the next TBM to complete its task at the end of February 2016 when it should achieve its breakthrough at the Education City Station. This will be followed shortly by the remaining TBMs. To date 30km out of 33km have been tunnelled on the Green Line. Click here, here, here and qt/13 for tunnelbuilder archive.
