The Highways Agency has awarded a £320,000 contract for ground investigation work for the A3 Hindhead tunnel scheme to Soil Mechanics Ltd. The work involves the drilling of twelve boreholes to determine ground conditions and monitor groundwater levels between August and November 2002. It forms part of the investigations being undertaken to provide 1.7 km twin tunnels beneath Hindhead Common for the realignment of the A3. The two companies will develop the scheme design in sufficient detail to permit publication of draft orders and preparation of the environmental statement in late summer 2003.
