The designers are Tec-Cuatro and Intraesa, who won a €956,900 contract. The section is 4.5 km in length, running in tunnel and serving five stations in Poble Sec, Fira I, INEF, Foc Cisell y Fira 2. Three of these will be open cut stations and two of them will be mined. The tunnelling method will be chosen depending on the geotechnical studies due to be completed at the end of 2003. In principle, it is planned to build part of the extension in cut-and-cover and part in a bored tunnel, possibly using a TBM. The tunnel will be a dual-track single tube and the TBM, if this method is chosen, would be 9.4 m in diameter. Time frame for construction estimated to last between 36 and 48 months depending on geotechnics and the tunnelling method eventually chosen. The Horta-Vall d'Hebron section on Line 5 will be built in a time frame of two and a half years, for completion scheduled in 2009, at a price tag of EUR111.6 million. Construction will recommence in December, in accordance with a modified project and implementing highly reinforced security measures. The new construction project will be based on complementary geotechnical investigation undertaken to know the subsoil composition, which will update the geological mapping and identify mines and wells, and on the revision of the works already executed. Sixteen new core drills have been planned, in addition to the 39 boreholes already done. On the other hand, preliminary inspections will be carried out to evaluate the status of the buildings situated in the influence zone of the tunnel. To maximize security and whatever the ground type that crews encounter at any time, all the tunnel will be supported with steel arches placed at short distance and a thick concrete layer. In January 2005, a collapse in a service tunnel obliged to evacuate a total of 1,276 people from their homes. Since then, work has been halted. The remaining 2.5 km stretch still to be bored will commence in the existing Horta station, then will continue until El Carmel station, which will be located in the cavern already partially excavated, to later run to the new Taxonera-Coll station and the last one in Vall d'Hebron, where Line 5 will connect with Line 3.
