The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has awarded the consortium comprising Webuild (leader), L&T (India), NESMA (Saudi Arabia) and ALSTOM (France) the EUR 2.33 billion (USD 2.75 billion) contract for the design and construction of 8.4 km of new alignment on the driverless Red Line of the Riyadh Metro: 1.3 km on viaduct and 7.1 km in tunnel excavated using TBMs.

The extension also includes all signalling systems and five stations, three of them underground: two stations will serve King Saud University, one will serve the medical city and medical faculties, and another will serve the university atrium. Three additional stations will be located in Diriyah, one of which is planned as a future interchange with Line 7. Completion is expected in approximately six years.
