The tunnel cross section is approx. 44 sq m but work will consist essentially in improvements to existing structures. New shafts and vertical or subvertical bores will have to be built. The subsoil is of the pyroplastic type, has variable thickness and is composed of tuff, pozzolans and compact igneous rock. Tunnelling to be done using traditional method (rotary head). Support with shotcrete, steel arches and, where necessary, bolts. A conference meeting will be held on 5th July.
