Project Scope
Award of preliminary and detailed design services for the Fljótagöng road tunnel scheme. The consultancy contract includes:
- Design of a 5.3km road tunnel
- Design of approximately 19km of connecting roadworks
- Two bridges
- One roundabout
- One rest area
- One underpass for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians
- Preparation of construction tender documentation
- Completion of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) documentation
The contract was tendered across the European Economic Area. Three bids were received (Efla hf., COWI Ísland and Norconsult ehf.).
Tunnel Characteristics
- Type: Single-bore road tunnel
- Length: 5.3km
- Alignment: Between Nautadalur (Fljót) and Hólsdalur (near Siglufjörður)
- Key design considerations: volcanic and glacial ground conditions, groundwater management, portal stability, drainage and lining design for freeze–thaw conditions, and ventilation and fire-life-safety systems in accordance with European road tunnel standards.
