The main portion of the tunnel will be bolted and shotcreted with and without steel fibres. The most difficult Myras section (about 200 m) will be supported by a bearing and watertight concrete structure. Mucking-out mainly by trucks (reloading outside access tunnels is not allowed for noise regulations and the rock will be delivered directly to the site of the new Vuosaari harbour). The project also includes four ventilation/escape shafts (55 m, 65 m, 60 m and 27 m deep) and four access tunnels. Work will start in each contract in December 2004 and be completed between spring and summer of 2007.The 19 km-long harbour railway line will be ready in 2008 when the new harbour goes into operation. About a million cubic metres of rock will be excavated and used to fill harbour structures. The tunnel will run as much as 60 m below the surface in some places. The environmental impact of excavation will be closely monitored. Numerous studies have been conducted to ensure that work will not cause damage to nearby buildings or nature.
