After thorough analysis of the construction methods, it has been decided that tunnel boring machines will be used on most of the tunnel route. It is the first time TBMs will be used outside urban areas in Austria. Two 10.7 m-diameter TBMs will excavate 2 x 10.7 km with an expected daily advance of about 25 m. Both tubes will be connected by 26 cross passages. Both machines will start in autumn 2005 from the west side and are expected to hole through in autumn 2007. From September 2004, some 2 x 2,400 m of tunnel will be driven by conventional means from the east portal in difficult ground conditions. Finishing work and equipment will take place until fall 2009. When it opens, the tunnel will cut trips from Vienna to Saint Poelten to 25 minutes. Technically challenging, the Wienerwald tunnel is the longest rail tunnel and second longest tunnel all types included ever launched in Austria.
