Sewage

Construction of 10.5 km of tunnelled sewer is planned through the Belfast Catchment Area. The GBP100 million seven-year plan is designed to modernise Belfast's ageing sewerage system. It aims to improve the current sewerage system and reduce the pollutant load on the River Lagan and its tributaries by 85%. The exact route of the 4 m-diameter tunnel through the city centre is still to be finalised, and will be influenced by the geology, availability of sites for tunnel shafts and other logistical constraints. It will snake its way through the city centre from Glenmachan Street near the M1 to a pumping station at Belfast Wastewater Treatment Works in Duncrue Street near the M2. Also included is 19 km of new sewers, 26 stormwater tanks and the repair of 800 sewers. In July 2003, a consortium of Atkins and Amec was awarded the commission to provide project management and construction services for this project. The entire project will take almost seven years to complete and work will start before this summer, with tunnelling work planned to start 18 months later. Visit www.atkinsglobal.com and www.amec.com 09/04.Prior information notice for design and construction of civil, mechanical and electrical/instrumentation works including approximately 10.4 km of tunnelled sewers with diameters ranging from 1.2 to 4 m within the Belfast urban area. United Kingdom, Strood - uk/41

Railway

Strood & Higham Railway Tunnels, Kent were originally constructed 1818-1825 by French POWs as part of the Thames Medway Canal, and converted to rail use in the mid-19th century. About 60% of the 3,483 m overall length of the two tunnels, which are closely abutting via a small crater-like depression known locally as the 'bomb-hole', is lined, mostly with the original brick lining. There are also some short sections, which have been lined since the original tunnel construction, using a variety of lining methods. The remaining 1,405 m is unlined over 16 sections of tunnel varying in length from 2.5 m to 256 m. A detailed survey carried out in February 2001 showed that the tunnel cross section varies considerably along the unlined sections, in width from 7.2 m to 9.6 m, and in height from 5.9 m to 6.9 m.The tunnels are in the Upper Chalk, and numerous chalk falls have been recorded since 1957. A fall in December 1999 struck and derailed a train. As a result, a 60 m section of tunnel at the fall location was lined in April, 2000, using a structural reinforced shotcrete lining. Shortly after the tunnel was reopened, another fall occurred close to the repaired section. A further fall occurred on 13th April, 2001 while a borehole was being cored in the chalk as part of a site investigation. The normal line speed on this section of the third rail electric route is 70 mph, but there is currently a speed limit of 20 mph.Design and Construct Contract awarded by Railtrack to Amco/Costain JV with specialist consultants London Bridge Associates. Anticipated closure period 20 to 30 weeks, total construction 70 weeks. Total cost estimate €25 million. Visit www.amco-construction.co.uk 34/02.

Crossrail Line 1

Mott MacDonald appointed to provide design services for Crossrail route one, the first phase of the £6 billion project. Design work includes services for all tunnels and underground stations for line 1 as well as for surface railways to the east. Line one will run from east to west linking Heathrow to Paddington then to Liverpool street in the City, with branches to Stratford and the Docklands. It includes 9 km twin tunnels starting west of Paddington station, with new deep stations at Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Farringdon. Construction to begin in 2006. Visit www.crossrail.co.uk and www.mottmac.com 24/02. Jacobs Engineering Group will provide design services, risk assessment, and preliminary costing for approximately 18 stations and 56 km of track west of Paddington, including buildings, track, bridges, tunnels, and all civil works. The scheme will require a twin 9 km tunnel between Paddington and Liverpool Street. Visit www.crossrail.co.uk and www.jacobs.com 32/02. Periodic information notice, deadline 15th February, 2003 for engineering design services for the construction of civil engineering works for Crossrail Line 1. Consultants will undertake civil, mechanical and electrical design services for the purpose of preparing a parliamentary bill and subsequently for the procurement of a design and build concession or concessions for the construction of line 1. The range skills required includes tunnel design expertise in the London environment, structural design capability for railway and highway bridges, stations, depots and other ancillary structures, trackwork and signalling design, electrification design, rolling stock design and telecom design. Visit http://ted.publications.eu.int/udl?request=Seek-Deliver&language=en&docid=014507-2003, OJ S 18, or contact Cross London Rail Links Ltd, London, fax +44 20 74917703. E-mail henrysnow@crossrail.co.uk 06/03.The UK government has revealed that the cost of Crossrail had risen to up to £15 billion and that it would take more than a decade to build. Transport secretary Alistair Darling said the plan to build Crossrail could be delayed by a further round of public consultation. This would mean Crossrail would not be built before the 2012 Olympics, which could hold back a bid by Britain to host the event. The east-to-west link includes twin 9 km mainline rail tunnels under London linking Paddington and Liverpool Street stations. They would cost about £5 billion.
