Nuclear Waste Repository

Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co/Svensk Kärnbränslehantering AB. (SKB) has signed a collaboration agreement with Implenia for the construction of the Spent Fuel Repository’s hard rock facility in Forsmark in Östhammar municipality, in Eastern Sweden. The assignment includes the planning, design and construction of a 5km access tunnel leading down to the repository and descending to a depth of approximately 500 m, three vertical shafts for ventilation and an elevator, a central area as well as main and transport tunnels. Rock construction work will take just over eight years and is a project worth several billion Swedish kronor.

The planning phase will begin in autumn 2025 and will be followed by the design and construction phases. The project will be finished by 2033. Across all project phases, the contract volume amounts to several hundred million Swiss francs.

The extension of the Spent Fuel Repository will take place in several stages before disposal can commence during the 2030s. The extension will continue for several decades. SKB plans to expand the deep repository into an underground system covering up to 4 km2 and around 66 km of tunnels by the 2080s. It will then offer space for storing up to 12,000 t of radioactive material in rock that is 1.9 billion years old. Visit https://skb.com/ and https://implenia.com/. 25/25.
