Upgrading of Section Florence North-Florence South of the A1 Highway

Upgrading of Section Florence North-Florence South of the A1 HighwaySouth of the Variante di Valico, the highway section running from Barberino di Mugello to North Florence and Incisa, south of Tuscany's capital, is also being upgraded. The total length of the project is 21,786 metres, whereof 70% to upgrade the existing south roadway and 30% to build a new south alignment. The total length of bored tunnels is 3,554 metres (16%).Contract 4-5-6This contract package corresponds to a total alignment of 11.5 km. Work is performed partly widening the existing roadbed (contract 4) and partly constructing a new southbound roadway (contract 5). The key element in contract 4 is the Casellina cut-and-cover tunnel (2 x 461.3 m). The Melarancio I bored tunnel (1,144 m), the Melarancio II and Lastrone cut-and-cover tunnels (180 m and 74 m) are the main civil engineering structures in contract 5. All are single-tube tunnels. Tunnelling has not commenced yet.Contract 6 includes three tunnels: Le Romite (300 m), already underway, Poggio Secco (660 m), still not started, and Del Colle (678 m). The three are 85 sq m single tubes. Contract 4-5-6 has been awarded to Baldassini Tognozzi-Pontello for EUR220 million. The contract includes the Pozzolatico single-tube tunnel (2,255 m, cross section 170 sq) and a 50 m extension of the Brancolano tunnel.
