Veidekke Secures Final Tunnel Contract for Gothenburg’s West Link Project

14/08/2025

Scandinavian construction powerhouse Veidekke ASA has officially been awarded the contract section of Gothenburg's ambitious West Link (Västlänken) rail project.

Project Overview

Scope: The tunnel includes a 54-metre concrete section and a 16-metre rock-bored section, designed to span the Stora Hamnkanalen near its confluence with the Göta älv.

Value: The turnkey contract is valued at approximately SEK 280 million (around USD 29.3 million) — expressed at the procurement stage before the final design was completed.

Timeline: Construction is set to begin immediately, with completion expected by mid-2029.

Significance in West Link Programme

This assignment represents the fourth and final construction contract within Gothenburg’s Haga phase of the West Link project, which aims to weave a seamless commuter and regional rail network beneath the city.

“We’re very pleased to be awarded another Västlänken subcontract,” said Fredrik Indevall, Regional Manager at Veidekke Anläggning Väst. “This contract strengthens our long-standing collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration and reflects our team’s capability to handle highly complex tunnelling assignments.”

Why This Matters for Tunnelbuder.com Readers

Technical Variety: The project’s split between concrete and rock sections offers insightful contrasts in tunnelling methodology and engineering challenges—key for industry professionals tracking tunnel system design.

Contractual Insight: A mid-size contract (SEK 280 M) provides a realistic benchmark for similar-scale urban tunnel jobs—useful for bid managers and estimators.

Strategic Positioning: Finalizing the Haga phase shows tangible progress in a major urban tunnelling programme, emphasizing how spacecraft-scale projects are modularly executed.
