Unveiled – The East extension of the REM in Montreal

On 15/12/2020  the CDPQ (Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec) unveiled the new Eastern extension project for the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) in Montreal, Canada.

This new public transit project, value EUR6.44 bn (CAD10 bn), consisting of 32 km of light rail of which 7 km of which will be underground as well as 23 new stations, will meet a historic demand in Montréal’s east end . This project together with the entire REM project, will create one of the largest automated transit networks in the world, with 99 km of rail and 49 stations.

The East REM - 100% electric and automated - will have 133,000 estimated users/days (by 2044) and it will have a frequency during rush hours of 2 min on the main section and 4 min on each of the secondary sections.

CDPQ would like to start work in 2023 and inaugurate the new line starting in 2029. Much of the project will be publicly funded, but the exact financial structure has not yet been defined.
