The Twin Peaks Tunnel (3.54 km-2.2 miles) first opened for service on 03.02.1918, and still is a vital connection between downtown San Francisco (California, USA) and its southern and western neighbourhoods. The tunnel, running between West Portal and Castro Muni stations, is used by several lines of the Muni Metro system and carries over 80,000 customers daily. With 100 years of service under its belt, the Twin Peaks Tunnel needs extensive work to its interior to continue to operate safety and reliably for years to come.
The work is finally getting started after delays in finding a new contractor for the project after SFMTA was unable to negotiate a new project timeline with the previous contractor. In January, the SFMTA Board of Directors terminated the contract with NTK Construction, Inc. and approved a new contract with the Shimmick/Con-Quest Joint Venture in February.
