02/04/2006
Tunnelling to Begin on DLR Extension to Woolwich Arsenal in London The Docklands Light Railway's extension to Woolwich Arsenal will run from the existing King George V station, going under the River Thames to a new Woolwich Arsenal light railway station in south east London.Tunnelling will begin in April and take 15 months to complete, during which time the Lovat TBM will remove 104,000 cubic metres of material, enough to fill 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The machine will dig out the first of two tunnels beneath the river, which will be up to 35 metres deep. It is scheduled to reach Woolwich by September, when it will be transported back to Docklands to begin the second tunnel. The extension, which will open in 2009, is part of Transport for London's five-year GBP10 billion investment programme. The extension will serve the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, which will hold the shooting events in the 2012 Olympics. The extension is being constructed by AMEC. The detailed design was carried out by Halcrow. Click uk/19. Visit www.lovat.com, www.amec.com, www.halcrow.com and http://developments.dlr.co.uk 13/06.
