The name of the TBM that will drill the 2.2 km long tunnel on the S19 Rzeszów Południe - Babica expressway was recently announced as Karpatka.  

A selection of names were chosen by the competition committee which included GDDKiA, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the contractor a consortium of Mostostal Warszawa and Acciona Construction. An online survey was then conducted which closed on 16/12/2022 and Karpatka won decisively (6073 votes), followed byBig Mi (822). The other names were Nela (673), Via Karpatka (558) , Podkarpatka (529) and Bieszczadka (408). 

The winners of the "Name the TBM machine" competition will be able to visit the construction site of the tunnel on S19 Rzeszów Południe – Babica and they will also receive a set of promotional gifts from GDDKiA and the contractor.  

At the end of 2022 the largest parts of the machine - loaded onto 3 barges and 2 pontoons - had reached the Opole harbour and were then transported by road to the Babica site  together with other components whi8ch had arrived at the Metalchem Opole and Stettin harbours. For further information please click here and pl/28 for tunnel builder archive.
