Rome metro line C - Executive design of section T2 gets underway

02/07/2025

With Ordinance N. 10 from the 27 June 2025, the Special Commissioner approved the final design for the 4km section T2 of Line C, involving the construction of four new stations (Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano - interchange with Line A and Clodio/Mazzini).

Roma Metropolitane, the client for Line C on behalf of Roma Capitale, has therefore given the green light to the General Contractor Metro C, a consortium led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori, to start the executive design of the additional T2 section. The new section will complete the so-called “Fundamental Route” of Line C, which extends from the south-east to the north-west of the city.

Meanwhile, the final design of the T1 extension, which will take the terminus of Line C to Farnesina via the Auditorium, is in its final stages. The subsequent start of construction on this additional section will allow for the construction of tunnels to begin directly from Farnesina.

The new stations for the T2 section

  • The Clodio/Mazzini station is located in the Vittoria district, between Viale Giuseppe Mazzini, Via Monte Santo and Via Giunio Bazzoni. The challenge of building the station lies in the high urban density of the area concerned; it will be developed on five underground floors, with an excavation depth of approximately 33 metres from ground level.
  • The Ottaviano station is located along Via Barletta between Viale delle Milizie and Viale Giulio Cesare, and will be an important interchange with the existing station of the same name on Line A, adding to the other planned interchanges (the one at the S. Giovanni station on Line A has already been completed, and the one at the Colosseo/Fori Imperiali station on Line B is nearing completion), helping to strengthen the network effect of mobility in the capital. The new station project involves five underground levels with a depth of 35 metres below ground level.
  • The San Pietro station is located within the gardens of Castel Sant'Angelo and will be the deepest on the T2 section, with seven underground levels and a depth of excavation reaching approximately 48 metres below ground level. The depth is determined by the line's tunnels crossing under the Tiber, with a clearance of approximately 25 metres from the bottom of the riverbed.
  • The Chiesa Nuova station is located in the square of the same name along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, near the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella and the Oratory of the Filippini; it will be built on six underground levels, excavated to a depth of 43 metres below ground level.

Two new museum stations

As with the other stations on the central section, the Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro stations will feature an exhibition of some of the artefacts found during the excavations; for both stations, the level immediately below street level is designed as a “museum atrium”, where passengers will flow through a single space enriched by exhibition areas (areas for the relocation of the structures found, display cases along the station walls or wall inserts) that will accompany travellers through space and time.

The construction phase

The works, carried out by the General Contractor Metro C, will begin following the approval of the executive design by the contracting authority, Roma Metropolitane; the first construction sites are expected to start at the beginning of 2026. The organisation of the works envisages the simultaneous start of activities at all four stations; subsequently, the excavation of the line tunnels will begin from the Clodio/Mazzini station area.  The construction sites will be managed in “macro-phases” to ensure the best possible traffic flow in the areas directly affected and in the surrounding areas.
