First TBM arrives at the Colosseum

24/06/2019

On the 24th of June TBM 1 which is excavating the Rome Line C arrived near the Colosseum, while TBM 2 has passed the Piazza Celimontana shaft.

After arriving at Fori Imperiali the TBMs, cannot remain stationary for a long time for safety reasons, as their presence could cause landslides and underground collapses. Once the TBMs are finished in all likelihood they will be buried. This is because the funds for the Piazza Venezia station project may not arrive in time from the government.

The TBM’s shields, are unable to reach the extraction shaft shown in the plans of the future Piazza Venezia station and they are not able to travel backwards to be extracted from a shaft (the diameter of the tunnel does not allow it after the laying of the segments). As a result they will need to be cemented in under the archaeological remains of Fori Imperiali Street. The other components of the TBMs can be brought back up to the Amba Aradam station’s box and extracted from there.

The Colosseum Station  (Line B) is the interchange with Fori Imperiali Station (Line C): and these works will start again in September 2019. The opening of Amba Aradam and Fori Imperiali, the two new stations of the T3 section, are scheduled for December 2022; with the opening of the archaeological stations scheduled for Spring 2023.
