Hydropower will be Albania’s first source of electricity but only 30 - 35 % of the country's hydropower potential has been developed so far. The Devoll Hydropower Project consisting of two stations at Moglice and Banje, they will source water from the Devoll River, about 70 km southeast of the capital Tirana. They will be generating 800 Gwh annually and increasing the electricity production of the country by 20% when complete. The Limak and AGE Joint Venture has been secured as part of the 2013 Civil Works contract.
The 6.7 km Moglice headrace tunnel will be drilled by a double shield 6.2 m diameter Robbins Crossover XRE TBM. The TBM, will excavate the 6.7 km (4.2 mi) long Moglicë headrace tunnel in rock with some expected water inflows. To combat the conditions, the machine has been designed with closure doors and a sealing system to contain sudden inrushes of water safely until they can be grouted off.
The TBM will be launched in the Autumn of 2016. Visit http://www.therobbinscompany.com/ and http://www.devollhydropower.al/new/?page_id=7419. You can also watch a YouTube video about the project here. 36/16.
