On 18.09.2014 the 4th International Corridor Reno-Alps Conference was held in Genoa, Italy. The Swiss Confederation aims to transfer freight from road to rail through the Lotschberg (opened in 2007), Gotthard and Monteceneri base tunnels.
Renzo Simoni, CEO of Alp Transit, has confirmed the official opening ceremony of the Gotthard Base Tunnel on the 02.06.2016 with its entry into operation on 11.12.2016. The Monteceneri Base Tunnel will be opened by December, 2019.
Switzerland will finance the railroad upgrade of the Genoa-Rotterdam line with EUR120 million. The agreement was signed during the conference by Maurizio Gentile, CEO of RFI, and Peter Fueglistaler, director of the Swiss Federal Office of Transport. The agreement aims to cover some of the EUR400 million worth of interventions required on the Luino-Gallarate-Novara link, tabled by RFI to adapt the network to the Swiss tunnels of Lotschberg and Gottardo-Ceneri to facilitate trains up to 4 m-high.
The Swiss Parliament approved a CHF990 million budget, including funds for operations in Italy, for the 170 measures (adjustments of tunnels, shelters, contact lines, signs and overpasses) in Switzerland, between Basel and the south side of the Alps. The main investment is for the new Boezberg tunnel. Around EUR40 million is needed for the profile improvement to 4 m of the new large intermodal terminal at Milan.
Eng Gentile said that two of the six construction lots of the Terzo Valico Ferroviario dei Giovi project, are already funded. The Sblocca Italia decree includes EUR200 million for the third batch of the project, and the Stability Law will fund enough money for continue the ongoing works. 38/14.
