The 10.96 km-long, 8.40 m-wide, 7.39 m-high Pir Panjal railway tunnel on the Banihal-Qazigund section of J & K railway line is the India’s longest and Asia’s second largest. Trial runs, started last December, are continuing on this section, which will be opened in two months time for regular train operations. With the commencement of services on this section, the Kashmir valley will be linked with the Jammu region by train. Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) broke through on 14.10.2011.
