Marmaray tunnel opens

29/10/2013
The first tunnel to connect two continents has finally opened in Turkey. The Marmaray tunnel beneath the Bosphorus is the world’s deepest immersed tube at 55 m below sea level at its lowest point. It comprises 11 prefabricated tube sections, eight of which are 135 m-long, two are 90.5 m-long, and one is 110 m-long. The tube, which is accessed by bored tunnels on both sides of the Bosphorus, was completed in September, 2008, but opening has been hampered by delays caused mainly by archaelogical excavation elsewhere in the system. Commuters will be able to travel between four stations until 2015, when the entire project is scheduled for completion. For the full story visit tunnelbuilder archive tr/14. 44/13.
