Legacy Way TBM reaches Kelvin Grove

Legacy Way, or Northern Link as it was formerly known, is Brisbane City Council’s 4.6 km-long road tunnel that will connect the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass (ICB) at Kelvin Grove. Transcity, a JV between BMD Constructions, Italian company Ghella and Spanish company Acciona, was awarded the EUR1.10 billion contract to design, construct, operate and maintain Legacy Way for a period of ten years. Transcity is using two 12.4 m-diameter Herrenknecht double-shield TBMs, each 110 m-long and weighing 2,800 t.

On 24.04.2013 the TBM Joyce, launched in October 2012, broke out at the eastern worksite, having excavated 49.7m in one day, 248.82 m in one week, and a 30-day maximum of 787.78m. The second TBM Annabell, launched in August 2012, will arrive at the eastern portal later this month. 36 cross passages and two substations are being installed between the two tubes.

Once open in 2015, Legacy Way will almost halve peak hour travel times between the Centenary Bridge and the ICB. Click au/30 for tunnelbuilder archive. Visit http://transcityjv.com.au and www.brisbane.qld.gov.au. 23/13.
