India - Breakthrough on Namma Underground metro, Pink line, in Bangalore

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) TBM Tunga commenced its final drive on 2nd February 2024 and in July the machine set a new record, tunnelling 308 m between K.G. Halli and the Nagawara retrieval shaft, surpassing the previous record of 273 m set by TBM Urja between Cantonment and Pottery Town in May 2022. 

BMRCL has deployed nine TBMs for the construction of Namma Metro lines across Bangalore. Eight of these machines - Urja, Varada, Avni, Lavi, Vindhya, Vamika, Rudra and Tunga - have successfully completed their tasks. The underground section consists of twin tunnels totalling to 21.9 km. 

The ninth TBM, Bhadra, commenced its final drive on 2nd April 2024 and it is currently working the 939-m northbound tunnel from K.G. Halli to Nagawara. 

The 21.26 km Pink Line will connect Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara via Diary Circle, M G Road and Shivajinagar, with 13.76 km of Underground Section from Dairy Circle to Nagawara.
