Germany has launched a tender for safety enhancement works on the B 294 federal highway in Baden-Württemberg, targeting upgrades to the Kirchberg (1,840 m) and Schlossberg (844 m) tunnels near Schiltach in the Black Forest. The deadline for submissions is 7 July 2026.
The project focuses on bringing the existing tunnels—both constructed decades ago—into compliance with modern safety standards. Central to the scheme is the construction of approximately 1.6 km of evacuation tunnels, along with 13 emergency call niches and two emergency containment basins to improve incident response capability.
Due to their close proximity, the two tunnels are classified as a “tunnel chain”, requiring enhanced and continuous safety measures in line with German and EU regulations. The works form part of a broader programme to upgrade tunnel infrastructure across the network.
Construction will present notable logistical challenges, particularly in maintaining traffic flow. Planned closures of the Kirchberg tunnel will require diversions through the town centre of Schiltach and via the Schlossberg tunnel, making traffic management a key consideration. The contract is scheduled to run from January 2027 to April 2030. For further information please click here. 14/26.
