Italian and French authorities will soon have to decide whether to expand the proposed 12 km-long x 8 m-diameter Frejus safety tunnel project to accommodate normal traffic. The objective is to optimize the planned investment of EUR400 million by using the second tube to split the flow of traffic. In Bardonecchia, on the Italian side of Frejus, construction of external installations will commence this Spring, with excavation starting in the summer ready for the TBM.
