Cross River Rail in Brisbane is the Queensland Government’s highest priority infrastructure project. It is required to support the region’s growing urban population. With the population of South East Queensland doubling every 30 years, the region is expected to reach almost 4.9 million people by 2036, with almost half of the total jobs growth remaining in Brisbane.
A 10.2 kilometre link from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, with 5.9 kilometres of tunnel under the Brisbane River and CBD (Central Business District), Cross River Rail will connect to both northern and southern rail networks from day one of operations, providing significant benefits to commuters from both directions. This second rail river crossing will ease congestion, improve network reliability and increase accessibility to the Brisbane CBD, allowing more people to travel longer distances, with shorter journey times.
Cross River Rail will deliver services to stations at five key locations, Boggo Road near Moorooka, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, Roma Street and the exhibition showgrounds at Bowen Hills.
The new Cross River Rail has been selected from over 100 design options. The Queensland Government will deliver the 25-chapter business case to the Federal Government for consideration during June 2016, before the July 2nd federal election date.
Following the business case submission, procurement may take up to 18 months, pending approval and funding arrangements. A project of this scale has an estimated construction time frame of five years. For further information visit http://www.crossriverrail.qld.gov.au/. 24/16.
