Construction work started on the Fehmarnbelt connection

With final German approval of the Fehmarnbelt project obtained in November 2020, construction of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Denmark and Germany is now well underway.

During 2021, the consortium Femern Link Contractors (FLC) will be able to start construction of a working harbor at Puttgarden and excavation of the tunnel gutter for the tunnel components under the seabed in the Fehmarnbelt.  Initially, the tunnel component factory at Rødby and the tunnel portal on Lolland will be established. This is followed by the production of the tunnel sections and their location under the seabed in the Fehmarnbelt.

The tunnel portal in Rodbyhavn on the Danish side is taking shape. From the tunnel portal  it will be 10 minutes by car or 7 minutes in train to Germany when the Fehmarnbelt finally opens in 2029.

The frame for the tunnel portal was finished shortly before the end of the year and the next stage has now been initiated by the Fehmarn Belt Contractors (FBC). This stage will befor building so-called spun walls, so that the construction work at the portal can be done without water penetrating. It is the Danish subcontractor M.J. ERIKSSON A / S doing the work on the spun walls. 600,000 m3 of sand have been pumped, and a 1400 m long retaining wall made of sheet iron is going to be built to secure Denmark's largest construction pit against water.
