IL&FS Transportation Networks Ltd has completed the construction of the longest tunnel in the South East Asian Region the Chenani to Nashri section of NH - 1A. The project had been awarded by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on May 3rd 2010. The provisional completion certificate has been issued which will be effective on March 8, 2017. The project is on annuity basis with a concession period of 20 years including a construction period of 1825 days.
On 09.03.2017 a trial run was conducted in the tunnel connecting Chenani and Nashri in Udhampur district. The 9.2 long tunnel (2 lanes) with parallel escape tunnel is set to open in the third week of this month. This project along with the other tunnel between Quazigund and Banihal on this corridor will be a big boost to state's economy. These two projects will provide all-weather connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and reduce the distance by at least 50km, and saving at least two-and-half-hours journey time.
