The modernisation of Bulgaria’s Vidin–Sofia railway line has taken a step forward, with the deadline for bids on the Vidin–Sratsimir section now extended to 21 May 2026.
The project covers the construction of a new 20 km alignment between Medkovets and Vidin, designed to improve capacity and reduce journey times along this strategically important corridor. At the heart of the scheme is a 2,975 m railway tunnel, which will bypass existing sharply curved track sections to create a straighter and faster route.
The contract is being procured as a design-and-build package, requiring the successful contractor to complete the detailed design in line with the client’s specifications and deliver the full construction works, including supervision responsibilities.
In addition to the tunnel, the wider upgrade includes major civil engineering works, such as new viaducts and bridges, track renewal with heavier rail systems, and upgrades to electrification infrastructure. Once complete, the line will support speeds of up to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight, significantly improving operational performance.
The scheme forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and is backed by European Union funding, underlining its importance in strengthening regional and cross-border rail connectivity.
The contract has an estimated value of €282.44 million (excluding VAT) and a duration of 1,520 days.
