Breakthrough at Maa Anandmayee Marg Station for DMRC in Delhi Metro Phase-IV

On December 5, 2024 the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) achieved a significant construction milestone in Delhi Metro Phase IV, Package DC-07,  with the completion of the longest tunnel between Tughlakabad Air Force Launching shaft and Maa Anandmayee Marg station on the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor.

The TBM EPB Amrit  - 105 m long - broke through at Maa Anandmayee Marg Station - in the presence of Sh. Rajiv Dhankher, Director Projects and Planning, DMRC and other senior officials - after a boring 2.65-km tunnel through mixed soil and hard rock strata. Frequent cutter replacements were required to bore through the hard rock. The tunnel drive alignment was meticulously planned to avoid passing beneath heritage structures adjacent to Mehrauli Badarpur Road.

The DC-07 package includes three stations, 11.26 km of tunnelling, a 223-m ramp, and a 119-m cut-and-cover section. The three underground stations are Maa Anandmayee Marg Station, Tughlakabad Railway Colony Station, and Tughlakabad Station. This package is part of the Aerocity to Tughlakabad Corridor (Line-10) of Phase-IV of the Delhi Metro, with a total route length of 23.62 km.

This new tunnel has been constructed at an average depth of approximately 16 m. About 1894 rings have been installed in the tunnel, with an inner diameter of 5.8 m.

Two parallel circular tunnels for up and down movement are being constructed on this stretch as part of the Aerocity–Tughlakabad corridor. The breakthrough on the other parallel tunnel is expected to be achieved in January 2025. The Civil contractor which has implemented this project is M/s Afcons.

The tunnelling work posed significant technical challenges, including the relocation of a sewer line, navigation through hard rock strata etc.

As part of the Phase 4 work approved so far, 40.109 km of underground lines are being constructed. The Aerocity-Tughlakabad corridor has underground sections totaling 19.343 km.
