Second 5.23 km-long x 95 sq m parallel tube in design for Central Pyrenees N230 highway from Toulouse to Lerida. 13.75 m-wide x 8.2 m-high, for three-lane traffic, with pedestrian connections to existing tunnel every 400 m. The project also includes 120 m-long cross passages to the existing tube every 400 metres, a service tunnel, refuges, safety niches, restructuring the accesses, installing equipment within the tunnel, ventilation facilities at each portal, as well as a management and operation building at the north portal. Time frame of 39 months with start in September, 2002 and completion in March, 2005. Doubling the tunnel is urgent since safety in the existing tube, also known as Alfonso XIII, scored 'very bad' in a survey published in April, 2000 by the international tourism alliance and the international motoring federation. The new tunnel, located on the Vilaller-Viella section of trunk road N-230, will be equipped with the most modern safety and control systems, including signage, video monitoring, video detection, telephone and videoconference, IP communication network, fire detection, radio communication, SOS stations and ventilation and lighting control. Indra will also supply the systems for the control centre, both for the new and old tunnels. With three lanes, one of which will be reversible, the new tunnel will solve safety problems in the existing tunnel, which is bidirectional and carries two very narrow lanes.
