The Oedo loop line in Tokyo will be completed in December, 2000. The first 12.1 km section of the 40.7 km line, which will provide almost 20 connections with suburban and metro lines, and major facilities and attractions, was opened in December, 1997 between Hikarigoaka and City Hall. Cost of the line, which was planned 28 years ago and approved for construction 14 years ago, has increased from $6.5 billion to $10 billion despite linear induction motor traction being selected to allow smaller, cheaper tunnels.
